Once a sleepy town, from the Raj reverie, Dehradun is now the busy capital of the state Uttarakhand. The name literally means 'Dehra', the camp of 'Doon' valley. The city is set within a wooded valley at the foot hills of the Himalayas. Surrounded by the mighty Himalayas in the north, the Shivalik range in the south, the river Ganga to the east and river Yamuna in the west, Dehradun is the gateway to Garhwal Himalayas.
Dehradun is the epicentre of Uttarakhand. At a stone's throw from the spiritual towns of Haridwar and Rishikesh, it's just 34 kms away from the nearest hill station, the 'Queen of the Hills', Mussoorie.
Air : Jolly Grant airport is at a distance of 24kms. Taxis are available at the airport, for transportation to the city and the neighbouring areas.
Rail ::Dehradun station connects the cities of north and west India. Major trains to and from Dehradun are: Shatabdi Express. Jan Shatabdi, Express. The Mussoorie Express, Doon Express, Sandra- Dehradun Express, Varanasi- Dehradun Express & Ujjain Express.
Road : Dehradun is well connected through roads with various cities of north India and the inner Himalayas. Taxis are available from Dehradun for various Himalayan destinations.
